A few minutes ago, I started hearing distant rumbling from my dorm room. Not sure what it was, I went to Google's real-time search, which was showing results from Twitter. Sure enough, there's a fireworks display happening over Boston Harbor.

So there's a useful application for Twitter: figuring out what's happening somewhere else (or nearby).
